Objective:
|
The clinical track beef specialist (Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor) position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the delivery of ruminant medicine and production management, with an emphasis on beef cattle. The successful candidate should have experience and a strong interest in teaching, clinical practice, extension, clinically relevant beef cattle research and the pursuit of collaborative research with members of the Animal Science and College of Veterinary Medicine. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere, ability to network, develop partnerships and build and retain relationships, as well as familiarity with the modern beef cow-calf industry also required. Primary duties of the Assistant Clinical Professor of Ruminant Health Management include, but are not limited to the following:
● Clinical responsibilities mainly through field service including routine reproductive work with beef and dairy cattle and small ruminants.
● Provide first opinion medicine, general surgery, and herd management consulting consistent with the college’s emphasis on high quality care and support of producers in North Carolina.
● Teaching responsibilities predominantly focused on the training and assessment of fourth year veterinary students, and ruminant health interns and residents in a clinical setting. Position also contributes significantly to the teaching of preclinical veterinary students, including participation in didactic courses, labs, and elective classes related to ruminant health, reproduction, and herd management.
● Frequent interaction with livestock producers and the North Carolina cattle industry. Extension responsibilities will include:
o Serving as an advisor for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services beef herds.
o Working to improve the knowledge of beef producers in the State of North Carolina, including participating in regional education programs and local extension meetings.
o Interacting with beef producers, county agents and private and public veterinarians to help producers, county agents and private and public veterinarians to help producers troubleshoot disease problems they might be facing.
o Providing training to Cooperative Extension Agents on Animal Health Management and how to best interact and collaborate with local veterinarians.

Training Required:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or an equivalent degree) required, with appropriate professional experience. |
Experience Desired:

Board certification or board eligibility (American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine, American College of Theriogenology) and/or an advanced degree are desirable but not required. |

An ambulatory truck is provided, and a full time veterinary technician is devoted to the service. |
Other Personnel : |
The technician and one house officer (intern or resident) participate in almost all ambulatory calls. The service is shared with another clinician, and teaching is shared across the entire ruminant team (6 faculty). |

The focus of this position is production medicine, reproduction, and consulting for cow-calf herds. Opportunities to work with dairies and small ruminants are a smaller part of this position. |
Practice Area: |
The NC State Farm Animal Field Service provides primary and referral care to cattle and small ruminants in collaboration with private practitioners around North Carolina. The service operates out of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine, and works in close collaboration with the in hospital farm animal medicine and surgery service. |
