Job Description:
Objective:
|
Under the direction of the Director, Division of Animal Health, New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA), performs tasks for
investigating and developing grant opportunities for the Division's programs; directs and conducts extensive epidemiology
investigations of disease outbreaks; instructs private veterinary practitioners and disease control inspectors on the State's livestock
laws, rules, reports and regulations; coordinates and/or conducts ante- and/or post-mortem examinations of animals or poultry to
determine health status; plans, directs and conducts the development and implementation of educational and outreach programs for
stakeholders and citizens of the state; arranges, coordinates, and presents animal disease control topics to agricultural groups and
stakeholders, conducts humane investigations; is responsible for issuing approval letters for the sale of conditionally licensed
veterinary biological products in the state; oversees and coordinates disease control and surveillance programs; acts as liaison
between the NJDA and various government, livestock, and animal health related groups; represents the NJDA at regular meetings
with agricultural stakeholders and partners, represents Animal Health in the New Jersey One Health Initiative; may assist the NJDA in
emergency planning; assists full-time veterinarians in their activities when needed and performs other office-related duties and
assignments given by the Division Director.
Candidate must have or be willing to obtain FADD (Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician) training and will be handling disease
investigations.
*This position will be filled at one of these levels based on qualifications of the candidate. |
Training Required:

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or completion of the training program administered by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) of the (AVMA), or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB),or achievement of diplomat status in any (AVMA) specialty board. |
Experience Desired:
|
Veterinarian 1 – No experience requirements. Veterinarian 2 – Three (3) years of experience in the field of animal disease control or laboratory diagnostic work. NOTE: Experience with livestock is preferred. |

The Division of Animal Health maintains disease control programs to protect the health and well-being of livestock in New Jersey. The Division tracks information about emerging diseases around the world that may impact the Garden State, conducts epidemiological investigations of livestock diseases, operates an animal health diagnostic laboratory, manages two contagious equine metritis quarantine facilities for imported horses and supports an aggressive livestock welfare program. In addition, the Division is also involved with animal emergency preparedness and response, especially during disasters that affect the health, safety and welfare of animals and their owners. |
