Job Description:

Objective:
Happy New Year, Colleague! On this first day of the new year, full of opportunities and unlimited potential, I’m offering a generous $200,000 compensation and management package, a four- or five-day workweek, shared holiday and emergency duties, and a staff dedicated to supporting both you and those beautiful animals. This is still the greatest profession on Earth. Birthing. It is one of, if not the most, fascinating experiences in this profession. To witness and assist life as it emerges—warm, new, pure, and clean—a package of Mendelian and metagenetic influence on this special day, marking a momentous punctuation of birth. For me, that feeling never gets old—seeing newborns struggle and often stand by the time our instruments are put away. A life ready to take all the variables it was given, cast them into the roulette wheel of chance, and live from this opening life window between now and the end. So much of what we do in this field is wordless or ineffable. It’s feeling in its rawest and purest form. This inexplicable relationship between humans and animals is the engine that drives each of us to get up every day, hoping to contribute to as many lives as we can in the best possible way. Together, I’d like us to continue honing the core skills of our craft: Accurate diagnoses: That physical exam where we touch, listen, smell, observe, and process. Impeccable surgical techniques: Mastering skill, speed, and precision. Concise, timely, and accurate data collection: Data recorded at the time of collection. Emotional intelligence and communication skills: Connecting deeply with humans. Team synergy: Achieving a flow state with a team you help to train, inspire, and guide toward shared goals. Mentorship: Real and virtual - an umbilical cord of support. Collaboration and learning: Practicing, listening, and learning from those at the top of their game—questioning methods and studies, and applying our non-artificial intelligence to determine the best path forward. This profession is in the birth canal of a new emergence—a renaissance. The difficult squeeze that changes serotonin and GABA levels, opens alveoli and reverses blood flow. What it means to be a veterinarian is being redefined. A rebirth is happening, and we’re in labor. Soon, the totality of veterinary medical knowledge, coupled with real-time processing of collective experiences and input, will be at our fingertips. We are collaborating through the filter of algorithms. The only choice is to embrace this new stethoscope called AI with a healthy blend of skepticism, intuition, and feeling. Science often disregards feelings, yet even the greatest minds—on whose shoulders we stand—did not ignore their instincts. I want to be there for the birth of this baby with an old soul, discovering new connections, methods, and ways to navigate the moving parts of what we do. This role of ours is elite, unique, and profoundly important. Through ongoing and unprecedented change, the animals remain the anchors of our existence. This wordless calling—from God—is to be the bridge, the maestro, and the emotional culinary artist of all things science, medicine, first responder, critical thinker, grief counselor, staff trainer, catheter installer, palpator, auscultator, skill acquirer, and, perhaps forever, the unwordable. Together, let’s find strength in numbers and stay true to the calling. I need you in North Dakota and/or Montana, where the winters can be hard, but the animals and people are hearty. Please call, text, or email me! Yours, in the sacred shared profession of veterinary medicine, Bruce Pedersen, DVM 208-255-8983 brucepedersen@gmail.com
