Job Description:
Objective:
|
Some of my favorite memories begin when the phone rings in the middle of the night stirring me awake from a night of slumber. I had just drifted off to sleep when the Bentley Vet emergency line rang in; on the other end I heard the calm but candid voice of a longtime client. Her sheep had been laboring for a protracted period with little progress. Without further ado, I donned some fresh garments and headed out into the brisk, breezy night air of this early April day. As I drove to the farm nestled into the country hillside of northern Dutchess County, I snuggled deep into my winter garb still trying to soak in the last remnants of sleepy memories. I followed the familiar farm drive to an English style lambing barn tucked away on the sloping pastural landscape.
In the darkness my client cordially greeted me outside. I collected my lambing supplies and headed into a dimly lit barn. Around the inside of this well-kept barn, organized about the edges, were numerous lambing pens where many ewes softly bleated to their newborn lambs. The ewe I had been called for was straining in the corner of the barn in obvious discomfort. Upon examination, it quickly became clear that a cesarean was the only judicious option. We quickly converted the manger into a surgery table, packing plenty of hay into it to cushion the distressed ewe. And there, in the relative quiet of the barn, moms were softly talking to their babies. The smell of crisp, clean straw at our feet, and with the wind howling outside the solidly sided barn, I commenced this life sustaining surgery. In this peace, time stood still as my client and I exchanged pleasant banter while both sensing a feeling of wonder for the contemplative moment we were present in. Elated, I pulled a warm, steaming, large ram lamb from the womb. With determined bleats he established his vitality. While he impatiently waited for his mother to be sutured back up, the beauty of this moment, though like many others, was not lost on me. What a privilege to be witnesses and participants to the miraculous and sublime! In the wee hours of the morning, I packed away my surgical box back into the vet truck. With joy I headed towards home to crawl back into bed which my lovely wife kept warm.
If the phone had not rung, I would have missed out on this wonderful gift!
Realizing such amazing moments can be a challenge in the hustle and bustle which is large animal veterinary medicine. But, seeing beauty in such moments leads to such an abundant life as a veterinarian!
