Objective:
|
The Tufts Veterinary Field Service at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an internship position in large animal ambulatory medicine. Tufts Veterinary Field Service is an eight-doctor practice located in Woodstock, CT and is a primary clinical and teaching unit of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, MA. Woodstock, CT is in the northeast “quiet corner” of Connecticut and provides a rustic New England setting while still having a convenient commute into the major cities of Hartford, Providence, and Boston. The bovine portion of the practice focuses on dairy production medicine and provides primary care for both beef and dairy cattle on farms owning 1 to 3000+ cattle. The practice’s equine services focus on preventative medicine, lameness, internal medicine, field surgery and reproduction. There is a sizable, and growing, case load in small ruminants and camelids to make the intern a well-rounded large animal ambulatory practitioner.
The internship program will provide a new or recent graduate with mentorship and a diverse practice environment to become a proficient and confident large animal ambulatory clinician.
The intern will share on-call responsibilities after a dedicated training period, and a back-up clinician will be available throughout the internship. The intern will participate in clinical and laboratory training of veterinary students throughout the academic year. Attendance and presentation in weekly didactic rounds with the Tufts Veterinary Field Service is mandatory. The intern will also be encouraged to participate in a research or independent study project. |

Training Required:
|
Requirements of the internship are DVM/equivalent degree and NAVLE board eligibility with the ability to obtain Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island licensure. The candidate must obtain USDA Category II accreditation for the same states as soon as possible. Interns are expected to reside within 25 minutes of the clinic. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic and an eagerness to work in the large animal field. |

This is a one-year position beginning July 11, 2022 and ending July 14, 2023. Applications are due September 17th, 2021 and applicant video-conference interviews will be held the weeks of September 27th & October 4rd. Final selection notifications will be sent no later than October 15th, 2021. |

Salary:
|
Salary determined by university allowances ($28,000 - 30,000), not including emergency incentive fees. Additional stipend for uniforms, licenses and continuing education. |

Tufts Veterinary Field Service is well-equipped and has dedicated support staff. The intern will receive hands-on training and experience with portable digital radiography & ultrasound, power float, lameness locator and in-house blood chemistry analysis. Opportunities for advanced training in bovine, small ruminant, equine specialty areas are available for interested candidates and include: the use of transrectal ultrasound, record analysis using DairyComp305, advanced reproductive techniques in cattle and small ruminants, on-farm investigation of herd-wide issues, and advanced equine internal medicine techniques including comprehensive thoracoabdominal ultrasound, endoscopy, and gastroscopy. |
