The American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) has applied for and received a USDA-NIFA grant to fund practice management training modules occurring during calendar years 2026 – 2028.
There will be 3 groups of 15 early career veterinarians (up to 10 years following graduation) selected each year of the grant program. Those completing the program will receive a certificate from AABP recognizing their participation and successful completion of this in-depth business management training program.
AABP members who do not qualify for the grant based on years since graduation or citizenship outside of the US can attend the course for a fee. Please contact fred@aabp.org if you are interested in attending. Limited seats are available.

Components of the program include:
- A core, in-person 3-day workshop held at the AABP headquarters in Ashland, Ohio. Topics will be interactive and cover areas of:
- Financial management, strategic business planning and budgeting: 6 hours
- Assessing practice financial health, business transitioning and valuation methods: 4 hours
- Leadership, communication, understanding personality and behavioral styles and human resource management topics: 7 hours
- Case studies dealing with incorporating these topics to help managereal world practice management situations (Combined faculty): 5 hours
- Participation in 6 virtual training sessions of 2 hours instruction per session: (12 hours total)
- Virtual session #1: Program overview, understanding foundation financial concepts and data entry of practice finances
- Virtual session #2: Entrepreneurial mindset of business creation, strength finder exercise and review business creation.
- Virtual session #3: Marketing, community outreach and exploring recruitment pools.
- Virtual session #4: Recruiting and retention.
- Virtual session #5: HRM compliance issues.
- Virtual session #6: Understanding personal finance, review of individual project learnings and wrap-up.
- The opportunity for participants to choose one of the faculty members to work with one-on-one, following the in-person workshop, on an individual project they identify as being important to them and their future needs and growth: 2 hours of individual advisor training
- Materials will be available to assist the participants to reach out to young people in their communities to encourage interest in rural veterinary medicine at the high school level to help grow our profession to meet the needs of tomorrow.
